I recently read The Roots and Fruits of Fasting by Dr. Mary Ruth Swope for a project I’ve just completed. Dr. Swope is semi-retired, devoting time to speaking and teaching on nutrition. She takes a very different approach to fasting. While she lays some biblical groundwork in the early chapters, she soon changes to a nutrition/diet angle.
One of the major premises of the book is that the world seems divided into two categories: one group has plenty, while the other has next to none. The first group not only has wealth, food sources and reserves, clean water, and other physical needs in abundance, but also finds itself with more than it can consume in regards to spiritual resources, such as Bibles in a multitude of prints and translations, DVD studies, Christian television and radio, inspirational books, seminars and retreats, etc. The second group is destitute when it comes to both physical and spiritual food. According to Dr. Swope, rosperous, blessed Christianity has not only the opportunity to help the poor and needy, but also the obligation to do so, as supported in Scripture.
This book contains a lot of nutritional and scientific information when it comes to fasting and the foods that we eat. There is a lot to be learned and “digested” when it comes to what enters our body. Though I do not agree on all of the interpretation she puts forward, I understand the point she is trying to make, and believe she comes by it honestly and with good intention.
If you are looking for a quick read on fasting that is informative and inspirational, I would recommend this book. Don’t write off the whole because you disagree with different points. The goal of the book is to educate and encourage Christians to fast, and to hopefully impact the world while doing so.

I also just finished this book. It’s an awesome read and gives a lot of details on fasting. I didn’t realize that it’s actually good for humans to fast.
This is a good book.
i read it in combination with “Letters from Home, Our Father’s Message of Love.”
This book has 14 chapters (or should I say ‘Letters’) that I read everyday for 2 weeks. Each chapter concerns itself with a different facet of the Christian faith and what the Bible says about it.
Forget interpretation or tradition, this book literally puts what the Bible says about , the Church, God the Father, Jesus, what He did etc.
It is done in such a way that every verse about these topics is written intot the chapter (with the verse) and is paraphrased into the First Person (our Father).
This book, read in a concentrated, devotional way is changing my life.
God bless,
John
Terrific book…a must read for anyone interested in fasting.
